Panasonic Lumix S 85mm F1.8 Lens Review (DxOmark): Good Sharpness!

Last November, Panasonic officially announced the new Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8 L-mount lens. Kevin Carter has just posted a full review of this new lens at the DxOMark.  The US price for this lens is $599, now available for pre-order at B&H / Adorama/ Amazon. It has high sharpness at most apertures.

They tested the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm F1.8 on the high-resolution Panasonic Lumix S1R .

Panasoic LUMIX S 85mm F1.8 has achieved a score of 41 in combination with the Panasonic S1R. This lens has a very high resolving power at almost all aperture values, especially when it is open. This lens has very good performance overall.

The distortion is -0.2%, which is a relatively small barrel shape. Peripheral light falloff is -1.5EV at full aperture, but overall it is generally well controlled. In addition, the transmittance is as excellent as 1.9T.

The part where this lens is a little weak is chromatic aberration of magnification, which reaches 9 μm on average in the range of F5.6 to F22.
The S 85mm F1.8 has a high resolution, especially when it is open. Although it doesn’t compensate for chromatic aberration of magnification compared to its rivals, it’s an affordable lens with solid performance overall.
