John Riley has just posted a full review of the newly announced Panasonic Lumix S 24mm F1.8 lens (Amazon/ B&H/ Adorama) at the ePhotozine.com. He Highly Recommended this new lens on Panasonic S5 .
The lens barrel is made of plastic and weighs only 310g. The structure is good, and dustproof and splashproof specifications are welcome. The mount is made of metal, and when the lens is attached to the camera, there is no play at all, and it feels solid.
There is very little focus breathing, and the size of the subject does not change with focusing. Also, this lens is about the same size as the 50mm F1.8 and 85mm F1.8 and has the same center of gravity, so the actual usability is the same as these lenses.
The AF is sharp and there is almost no operating noise.
This lens is a very good optical system, and its lightness is a great advantage for long-time shooting. When actually used, it is surprisingly light for a full-frame lens.
The resolution is very good at F1.8 in the center, excellent at F2 to F11, and very good at F16. The corners are good at all apertures except F4, and F4 is very good.
Chromatic aberration of magnification was measured with all known automatic corrections disabled. The chromatic aberration in the center is close to zero, and the corners are well corrected.
Flare is well suppressed in backlight, and there is no decrease in contrast even if there is a bright light source in the screen. Flare ghosts do not occur without considerable effort, so there is no problem with backlight resistance.
Pros: Excellent central sharpness, Dust and splash resistant, Virtually no central CA, CA well controlled at edges, Reasonable vignetting, Low distortion, Excellent handling, Fast and accurate AF, Low focus breathing, Matches with 50mm and 85mm siblings and Low flare.
